Intended as a replacement for the Macintosh Portable, the 140 series was identical to the Powerbook 170, though it lacked a number of the high-end model’s features to make it a more affordable mid-range option. The most apparent difference was that the 140 used a cheaper, 10 in (25 cm) diagonal passive matrix display instead of the sharper active matrix version used on the 170. Internally, in addition to a slower 16 MHz processor, the 140 also lacked a Floating Point Unit (FPU) and could not be upgraded. It also came standard with a 20 MB hard drive compared with the 170′s 40 MB drive.
Specs:
The Apple Macintosh PowerBook 140 features a 16 MHz 68030 processor with 0.5k of level 1 cache. It lacked an FPU which meant that mathematical processes took longer to complete.
Memory:
Incorportated in the Powerbook 140 was either 4MB or 6MB of ram comprising 2MB soldered direct to the motherboard and either a 2 MB or 4MB PSRAM card. The Powerbook incorporated a single memory slot that accepts a 6 MB memory module once the existing module has been removed.
Storage:
The Powerbook incorporated either a 20 MB or a 40 MB SCSI hard drive. The hard drive could be technically upgraded but sourcing a SCSI laptop hard drive proved difficult for many.
Video & Graphics:
Incorporated into the Powerbook 140 was a 9.8″ monochrome passive-matrix (1-bit) Supertwist LCD. It offered a native resolution of 640×400. Controlled by dedicated VRAM it offered no upgrade path and had no external video connector.
Ports & Connectivity:
This Powerbook features dual Serial ports, 8 bit mono sound output, omni directional sound input microphone, an ADB port and an HDI-30 SCSI port. It is able, via the HDI-30 port to the rear, to connect to up to 6 external SCSI peripherals. This Powerbook does support SCSI Disk mode.
