The 7100 was the middle of the new PowerMac (PowerPC) range, boasting better performance and features than the 6100 but still a little way behind the
top-of-the-line Power Mac 8100. Housed in a slightly re-styled Mac IIvi case (the same hideous case seen on the Mac IIvi, IIvx, and Quadra 650) the 7100 ran at a blistering 66MHz (later speed bumped to 80Mhz) a whole 6MHz faster than the 6100.
Specs:
The Apple Power Macintosh 7100/80, based on the Carl Sagan (BHA, LAW) architecture, features a 80 MHz PowerPC 601 processor, 8 MB or 16 MB of RAM (expandable to 136Mb), and a 250 MB or 500 MB hard drive in a high-profile desktop case. Note: The 7100 has four RAM slots which, in theory allows 4x64Mb of main memory but, in reality, will only accept 32Mb modules. An optional CD-ROM drive was available, and four expansion slots (in stark contrast to the 6100′s single NuBus PDS slot) were included.
Ports:
This model has HDI-45 for video. It included two Geoport serial ports standard (one printer, one modem). 1 x AAUI-15 Ethernet standard. Single microphone sound in port. Single rear-mounted sound out port. Finally, the usual SCSI (DB-25) and Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) keyboard & mouse port.
Video & Graphics:
The system has an HDI-45 port onboard that can use 640k of system memory for video and supports a display at 512×394 or 640×480 at 16-bit or 832×624 at 8-bit.
Supported OS:
The Powermac 7100/80mHz was originall shipped with System 7.1.2 (which included a PowerPC enabler). Later operating systems, right through the classic range were supported including OS 8.6 and OS 9.1. Mac OS X is not supported by the first generation PowerPC architecture.
