Apple Mac IMac 266 mHz Caddy Loading (M4984)

iMac G3 Caddy Loading

The iMac 266mHz (M4984) is a G3 (PowerPC 750) based Powermac system. It was shipped with an apple stock 6 gig hard drive and 32 megs of 144pin memory all all on a single caged computer, slung under the main chassis of the CRT screen.  It came with a 15 inch CRT screen built into the case, but lacked any floppy drive or mouse.  This, luckily, is not an issue as floppy disks are a thing of the past!

It was offered in five different colors — lime (lime green), strawberry (pinkish-red), blueberry (royal blue), grape (purple), and tangerine (orange-yellow).

fruit flavoured iMac G3The 266 mHz iMac system was shipped with matching apple standard USB Keyboard and Puck Mice. A power chord was included with the unit.

Apart from different color options, the iMac G3/266 (Fruit Colors) models were quite similar to the iMac (Revision B) that the line replaced, but shipped with a larger 6.0 GB hard drive and lacked the “Mezzanine” internal expansion slot and IrDA capabilities.

iMac Caddy loading motherboardThe motherboard layout to the caddy loading iMac is pretty easy to work with (once you’ve removed it from the mac itself).  To the left is a memory stick which makes up the video ram (SGRAM) for the computer.  This can be upgraded to a maximum of 6 MB.  The cage (top center) contains the G3 CPU.  Flip off the cage and you have access to the cpu and memory that is installed above and below the daughtercard.  The CDrom drive hides the hard drive.  Remove 2 screws, slide out the optical drive and replace the hard drive itself with a larger sized unit.

Access to the Pram battery is under the grey cable directly below (or in front of) the cpu cage.  When the pram battery has failed and the mac no longer boots, this should be replaced and the mac reset by pressing and holding down the microswitch located top of the picture to the right of the cpu cage for 30 seconds.  Reassemble and power on the mac afterwards.
