Apple iMac G4/1.25 20-Inch Flat Panel (USB 2.0)

The final iMac G4 was released some 2 months after the iMac G4 1.25gHz 17 inch and iMac G4 17″ 1.0gHz FP. It’s specs didn’t result in an improvement in speed, but one of a real-estate gain.  With larger screen size, users could simply do more without having to constantly switch between open documents.

Design was the essence of the iMac G4.  Gone was the space hogging CRT monitor, to be replaced with a flat paneled display that took up such little space- surely the actual computer should follow?  The resulting “pudding bowl” offers an aesthecially pleasing solution- albeit not to everyones taste.  A tilt and swivel chrome arm allows the user to set the height of the screen, which also rotates around the top of the base.  The iMac G4 shipped with both Apple Pro keyboard and Apple Pro Mouse. The speakers (shown in image) were included in the Package.

The Apple iMac G4/1.25 20-Inch (Flat Panel) features a 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7445 (G4)processor with the AltiVec “Velocity Engine” vector processing unit and a 256k on-chip level 2 cache, 256 MB of RAM (333 MHz PC2700 DDR SDRAM), an 80.0 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive (7200 RPM), a tray-loading 4X “SuperDrive”, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM (AGP 4X support), and support for AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth with optional cards.

The internal components are housed in an attractive 10.6″ half-sphere, ice white case with a chromed stainless steel neck that supports a 20″ TFT Active Matrix LCD display (1680×1050 native).  Unlike some earlier iMac models that are convection-cooled, the iMac “Flat Panel” series is cooled by a quiet internal fan.

This system has three USB 2.0 ports and two Firewire “400″ ports (eight watts shared). Apple advertised that this computer had five USB ports — three USB 2.0 ports on the computer and two USB 1.1 ports on the keyboard. This model has expansion slots for AirPort Extreme (802.11b/802.11g) and Bluetooth.

Display Specs:

This model has a 20.0″ TFT active matrix display with a nativeresolution of 1680×1050. Video Support:

This mac has a Mini VGA port for connecting an external Monitor. Apple reports that this system has a “mini-VGA output port ([that] requires [a] VGA display adapter)” with support for video mirroring at output resolutions of “640 by 480 pixels at 60 Hz, 800 by 600 pixels at 75 Hz, and 1024 by 768 pixels at 75 Hz”. However, the hardware is capable of using an external display in dual or “extended desktop mode”, Apple just blocked the capability in firmware to do this.

Classic Support:

This model shipped with MacOS X 10.3 “Panther” (and cannot boot into MacOS 9). However, it is capable of using MacOS 9 applications within the MacOS X “Classic” environment provided with MacOS X 10.4.11 “Tiger” and lower (“Classic” is not supported starting with MacOS X 10.5 “Leopard”). Apple stopped the support of PowerPC macs with 10.6, switching to intel only.
