The iMac Computer
The iMac was borne as a 233mHz all-in-one machine, not so long after the release of the G3 all-in-one. It's classic design enclosed a 15 inch crt screen along with a single motherboard with daughter card containing the cpu and cache. This iMac came in three flavours:
-
Original Bondi Blue iMac G3 233mHz with 32 megs of ram and 4 gig hard drive
-
G3 266mHz iMac, as above
-
G3 333mHz iMac. The first iMac to come in four flavours.
-
The above all had caddy loading cd rom drives.

|
The first upgrade (other than cpu speed) was a complete change of the motherboard, increasing the bus speed, putting the processor on the motherboard and changing the memory from so-dimms to pc100 dims. The speed bump in the iMac range went from 333mHz top spec to 350mHz as the slowest iMac available. The design incorporated a slot loading cd rom drive, later upgraded to dvd and further addition of firewire 400 to 400mHz iMacs. The design didn't change again until the addition of the G4 processor. Flavours ranged from bondi blue to lime green. Specs included:
iMac G3 350mHz with cd rom drive and a 6 gig hard drive. 64 megs ram
-
iMac G3 400mHz with cd or dvd rom drive, 10 gig ide hard drive and 64 megs ram
-
iMac G3 450mHz- very rare and released predominantly in the far east (Hong Kong) and America
-
iMac G3 500mHz- last in the line of original colours and inclusion of iMac Snow
-
iMac G3 600mHz- the inclusion of dalmation iMacs

After the G3 all-in-one iMac came the G4, with it's pudding bowl shape and the changing of the screen from crt to TFT. This resulted in a serious reduction in size of the iMac with everything being included in an up-side down bowl about the size of a dinner plate. Apple incorporated standard parts in the iMac G4 including a 5 1/4 inch dvd rom or rw drive, standard ide hard drive and a circular motherboard incorporating 3 usb ports and 2 firewire ports. The iMac also included a small non standard video jack for use on an external monitor. The high quality TFT and unique design incorporating a tilt and swivel chrome arm meant that this highly versatile iMac became the flavour for every budding got to have it twenty something city slicker and sales of the iMac soared. |
