Music on the Mac

Do you Podcast?  Podcasting is the sharing of a show or mix through itunes.  Use your mac to share your mixes, music or radio show over the web, so others can download it to their ipod and listen to it later.

iTunes is a great way to listen to some online radio stations from around the world.  If you're the sort who gets a rush out of others hearing you creations, you could consider setting up and radio station on itunes.

Garageband         Logic      Protools        Cubase

Apple have produced 2 variants of Logic since the application became synonymous with Macs only.  Logic Express provides a cut down version with input channels limited to 12.  And a resolution of 96 kHz.  This coupled with a number of Bus/ Aux tracks being limited to 8 and a limited number of effects means it's targeted more towards those just startng out with music, or progressing from Garageband to some thing a little more advanced.  Logic Pro provides far more advanced features an contains many more effects as well as channels being unlimited and tracks being as many as 64.

Logic Express

Providing a step up from Garageband and a price tag of $299.00, Apple's Logic express is pretty feature packed.  It contains an extensive array of music instruments from piano to keyboard.

The software allows for the recording of up to 12 instruments, voices, environmental sounds and effects, making it more than enough for budding musicians to record their band or get their tracks backed up.

Logic Express features:

·    GarageBand Integration: Import GarageBand projects and take them to the next level.

·    Effects: Add any combination of 37 high-quality effect plug-ins to the mix.

·    Instruments: Compose with 18 expressive software instrument plug-ins.

·    Apple Loops: Select from more than 1,000 Apple Loops to add color to any song.

·    Multi-track Input/Output: Use up to 12 input and output audio channels.

·    Automation: Record control settings for mixing, effects and software instruments.

·    Notation: Create, edit and print music scores with comprehensive notation editor.

·    iTunes Integration: Import and export songs from iTunes to hear tracks on your iPod.

·    Track Mixer: Record, mix and adjust on up to 255 stereo tracks on 8 audio buses.

·    No Hardware Limits: Freeze tracks to expand plug-in capacity during production.

·    MIDI Editing: Enjoy fine control of MIDI editing and processing.

·    Easy Setup: Use the Setup Assistant for easy system configuration.

·    Customization: Customize your setup with user-definable key and MIDI commands.

·    Professional Audio: Edit with high-quality audio resolution of up to 24-bit/96kHz.

·       Virtual Studio: Layering up to 64 simultaneous software instrument tracks.

In order to use the software instruments, it's best to consider a midi keyboard with midi in and out ports.  We use a Yamaha PSR620 to input our music to the system.  To communicate with the mac, the keyboard needs to be connected through a low latency Midi interface which turns the midi signals into signals for the usb port of the mac.

Apple recommended System Requirements Checklist

·                 Macintosh computer based around a PowerPC G4 processor minimum.

·                 Memory:  512MB minimum (768 MB recommended)

·                 Operating System:  Minimum OS X (10.3)

·                 Display:  a resolution of 1024x768

·                 DVD rom drive for installation

·                 Hard Disk Space:  Minimum of 4 gigabytes (7200rpm required)

Older versions of logic are available for the mac.  Requiring less processing power, you can install them on our recommended system and easily do all the tasks you need.

Did you know:

  • Logic Express supports multiple processors on the Mac?  That's why we recommend a Dual G4
  • Apple suggests a second Hard drive .  That way, Logic can work off one while reading your tracks from the second drive.
  • With 2 separate USB buses built in, the mac will spport your USB peripherals at full speed
  • With Firewire 400 ports on board, your mac will be able to give a sustained 40 megs per second throughput from external peripherals.  Firewire hard drives will be able to deliver outstanding performance when recording and playng back music tracks.

Logic Pro

Now in version 7, Apple's Logic Pro is a serious piece of software.  With it's new instruments and effects, coupled with loop composition tools it's pretty damn powerful.  This is further enhanced by the fact that it will tap processor power from networked macs to further enhance performance.  Imagine a music editing and production suite capable of 128 stereo streams.

The software package is second to Nuendo in terms of cost ($999), but you get more plugins and audio instruments than with any other software.

Logic Pro can be difficult to learn when compared to other packages, but it is still the best value in terms of quantity of instruments and effects.  The looping effect is only good when you use the built in loops and fails in terms of creating your seamless loops from you own previously recorded audio.
