Apple Power Macintosh G3 266 Minitower

Apple Powermac G3 Tower

The Apple Power Macintosh G3/266 Minitower, based on the compact Gossamer architecture, features a 266 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3) processor with 512k of backside cache, 32 MB or 128 MB of RAM, a 4.0 GB or 6.0 GB hard drive, a 24X CD-ROM drive, ATI 3D Rage II+ or Rage Pro (starting May 1, 1998) graphics acceleration with 2 MB or 6 MB of VRAM, and either the “Whisper personality card” with audio input/output or the “Wings personality card” with audio/video input/output — all packed into an easily expandable minitower case (see personality cards below).

The Power Macintosh G3 models were the first Apple Macs to use the “third-generation” (G3) PowerPC 750 processor which also unveiled a new “backside” level 2 cache for a substantial performance boost compared to earlier systems using a “lookaside” level 2 cache.  The G3  Macs were the last to retain the Old World Rom, replaced with the G4 macs, featuring a “New world rom”, which was far more compact.

There were  two different “standard” configurations of the Power Macintosh G3/266 Minitower — the original version (M6142LL/A) with 32 MB of RAM, a 6 GB IDE hard drive, 2 MB of VRAM, a Zip drive, S-video and composite video input/output ports (Wings), and the second version (M6459LL/A), which completed the line-up in Jan of 1998 and came with 128 MB of RAM, a 4 GB Ultra/Wide SCSI hard drive, 6 MB of VRAM installed on board (and an additional 8 MB of VRAM on a 2D/3D graphics PCI card), dual display support, and both 10Base-T and 10/100Base-T Ethernet.

‘Perch’ Personality Cards:

Three different personality cards were available for the beige G3 computer and each added a variety of additional functions to the Mac.  The desktop G3 was shipped with the Whisper variety, which featured Audio in and out.  The Mini Tower G3s were shipped with added functionality, such as A/V and where required by the customer, DVD playback support (BTO Mac).

Whisper Personality card (Apple Part Number 820-0972-A)- Added line level audio input/audio output

Wings Personality card (Apple Part Number 820-0971-A)- Added composite video input/output, S-Video wings personality cardinput/output, RCA style left/right audio input/output, and line level audio input/output.  Two versions of the Whisper Personality card were available, one with an AIO claw and added “IDE” style connector.  Both shipped with an Apple/GV 56K modem card comms slot. However, the slot only accepts the modem card, unlike the Performa 6500.

Bordeaux Perch Personality Card (Apple Part Number 820-0983-A) The card added MPEG decoder capabilities via a C-Cube MPEG decoder chip to the G3 beige mini tower and was used for DVD playback. It was typically used in Built to order (BTO) G3 macs that also featured a Matshita DVD-ROM drive.

Note that The slot on the personality card uses the same connector as a Comm Slot II connector, and Comm Slot II cards will fit. However, the slot on the personality card is a modem slot, only providing serial support for Comm Slot II-capable modems. This slot does not work with Ethernet cards, and should not be regarded as a Comm Slot II slot.
