Apple Mirrored Door G4 Powermac Dual 1.25gHz system (FW800)

The Apple Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP MDD, dubbed the “Mirrored Drive Doors” or “Wind Tunnel” model is based on the architecture used by the Xserve G4.  It was re-released in January 2003 as a single or dual processor model due to high demand by Appe users who still required Mac OS 9 booting on their macs. The key difference was the addition of firewire 800. The original G4 dual 1.25gHz MDD was released the previous year.

Specs:

The PowerMac MDD G4 1.25 DP features dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processors is an , both with AltiVec “Velocity Engine” vector processing units, 256k level 2 on-chip caches and 2 MB level 3 backside caches.

In addition, this model ships with 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM (256 MB after January 28, 2003), a 120.0 GB (7200 RPM) Ultra ATA/100 hard drive ( 80.0 GB after January 28, 2003), a 2X/6X/8X/4X/24X SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) (a 12X/32X/10X/32X DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo Drive after January 28, 2003), an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (AGP 4X) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM, a digital audio sound system with a highly-efficient Tripath “Class T” amplifier.

System Upgrade:

After January 28, 2003 (G4 Dual 1.25 FW800), this system also includes a FireWire “800″ port, and support for AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 1.1 withPower Mac G4 Dual Processor MDD open case optional cards. The case is similar to earlier Power Macintosh G4 models, and has the same fold down door on the side that makes upgrading very easy, but also sports decorative indentions on the front reminiscent of the “Ventiports” on a 1949 Buick Roadmaster and two “mirrored finish” external drive bays. This model shipped with the Apple “Pro” keyboard and optical mouse. Custom configurations were also available. This mac will work with a standard SVGA crt screen.

PCI & AGP Slots

In the default configuration, this model has four open 33 MHz 64-bit PCI slots, and a 4X AGP slot occupied by the graphics card. It also has an open AirPort (802.11b) expansion slot.

Hard Drive Upgrades:

It has four internal 3.5″ drive bays — two Ultra ATA/66 and two Ultra ATA/100 — intended for hard drives and two external 5.25″ drive bays intended for optical drives. By default, with a single hard drive and one optical drive installed, three internal 3.5″ bays and one external 5.25″ bay are free. With OS X installed and similar sized hard drives, Mirrored Raid Arrays can be set up.

Operating System Support:

This model is capable of booting Mac OS 9 and using Mac OS 9 applications within the Mac OS X “Classic” environment provided with Mac OS X 10.4.11 “Tiger” and lower (“Classic” is not supported starting with Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard”). It cannot boot into OS 9 by natively.

Memory:

The PowerMac MDD G4 accepts DDR 333 (PC 2700u) memory. This system can support up to 2.0 GB of RAM, but can only use 1.5 GB while booting MacOS 9 (less than 1.0 GB per application).

Video:

By default, this model has an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM. It also could be configured at the time of purchase with a NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti graphics card with 128 MB of DDR SDRAM. The video card occupies a 4X AGP slot.

According to Apple’s TIL, the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro is capable of simultanously supporting dual displays (one using the ADC port and another using the DVI port — DVI to VGA adpater also included). 1920×1200 maximum for digital displays and 1600×1200 maximum for analog.
